WILMINGTON — Janette Shepard Totten Stull, 95, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, at The Davis Community in Wilmington.
Ms. Stull was born Dec. 18, 1922, in Lincoln County, West Virginia, to Ira and Mabel (Anshutz) Shepard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul Totten; former spouse, Thomas Stull; son, David Totten; brothers, Gordon and Al Shepard; and sisters, Jean Rohrig and Rita Dukes.
She is survived by her children, Charles Totten (Liz) of Puyallup, Washington, Nancy Fetter (Don) of Wilmington, Dee Dee Faulkner (Dennis) of Somerset, Kentucky, Sally Goettel (Tim) of Cary, Tom Stull of St. Albans, West Virginia, Margaret Kellas (Tim) of Wilmington; and sister, Virginia Roth of Bellingham, Washington. She left behind 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
In the 1930s, her family ran the camp at Lower Falls Beach in St. Albans, West Virginia, where she had many fond memories during summers there. Jan graduated from Charleston High School and attended Morris Harvey College.
Jan loved all sorts of sports. She played basketball in college and with the Highlawn Elementary School Team in the St. Albans PTA League. Distinguishing herself athletically, she bowled at least two perfect games, had two hole in ones and did a backflip off the diving board at the age of 72. Loving the camaraderie and the challenge of the game of bridge, she played for many years.
Her service activities included serving as the first female vestry member at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in St. Albans, West Virginia. She was also a member of the Thomas Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years. However, her greatest service was that of supporting her children and grandchildren in their interests and activities. She served as a den mother and girl scout leader, and coached church league basketball, diving and gymnastic teams. Additionally, she attended recitals; baseball, basketball, soccer and football games; golf and tennis matches; and cross country and swim meets. Jan was their biggest cheerleader.
She will be remembered fondly as a strong, intelligent woman who loved her family and friends and lived her life on her own terms, but being mindful of the importance of serving others.
Her family would like to thank the staff at the Sinclair-Hogue House and The Davis Community for their attentiveness and loving care during the last year. In addition, the support and care of Hospice of the Lower Cape Fear for Jan and her family was compassionate, comforting and appreciated.
A funeral service for Jan will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 405 B St., St. Albans, West Virginia, with the Rev. Charles Pope officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. with services following at 3 p.m.
