WILMINGTON — Audrey Ferguson Lewis, 88, passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.
She was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Mount Vernon, New York, to the late Daisy Isabelle Canniff and Roger Williams Ferguson. She graduated from A.B. Davis High School in Mount Vernon and worked briefly for Guenungs of Mount Vernon. She married her sweetheart, Jere L. Lewis, and they celebrated 65 years together on April 4 of this year.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three children, Melody Bartholomew Lewis, Lorie Lewis Cotton (Tom) and Kirk Ferguson Lewis; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family as a loving and dedicated wife, mother and “Nan” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Ruth Punchard (Dan) and family of Rockland, Massachusetts; and nephew, Roger Carson of Bronxville, New York. She was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Sears Linton.
Audrey was a former member of Church of the Good Shepherd, where she was a member and past president of the Shepherds. For the past 28 years, she had been a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She was a devoted member of the Altar Guild for 20 years. Audrey had been a member of the Hanover Lioness Club and served as president as well. Because of her love for little children, she served at several preschools as a teacher’s aide including Winter Park Preschool, Creative World and the Montessori School.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 16 N. 16th St., Wilmington. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following services.
