Francis J. “Frank” Smith, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018. Born Oct. 22, 1942, in Hoboken, New Jersey, Frank was raised and educated in Hudson County, New Jersey.

He graduated from Providence College with a degree in economics and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Economics from Trinity College.

Frank was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served his country as a platoon leader and executive officer in Virginia, North Carolina and overseas. He spent much of his career working for Pfizer, first as a buyer in the Groton, Connecticut, plant before moving his family to Southport, where he would become purchasing manager and material manager.

Frank was a man of faith. A devoted member of Sacred Heart Church, he served on the Parish and Finance councils and volunteered as a religious educator for children and teens. He also believed in giving back to his community. Frank coached the Dixie Youth baseball teams for 10 years, served on the Board of Adjustments for Yaupon Beach and Oak Island for 15 years and acted as a director on the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce. Frank was a loving husband, father and grandfather, as well as an avid golfer. He will be remembered as someone who had a truly kind and joyous spirit — one that earned him friends throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia; sons, Jeffrey and David; grandchildren, Holden and Sawyer; and treasured dog, Bubba.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon, Friday, Aug. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5269 Dosher Cutoff Road SE, Southport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
