
HAMPSTEAD — Robert Adrian King, 88, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born on May 7, 1930, in Wilmington, the son of the late Adrian Sidbury King and Hettie Mae Alexander King.
Mr. King graduated from New Hanover High School in 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1954 to 1956. Robert was a farmer in Pender County for over 40 years. He served as an ASCS Committee member, Surf City councilman from 1980 to 1986 and a Pender County commissioner from 1986 to 1990. He was also a member of Providence Baptist Church. Robert enjoyed horses, travel, camping and fishing as well as time spent working on various projects like housing developments and campgrounds. He especially loved time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Johnson Covil King; stepdaughter, Cynthia Calkin (Brant); stepson, John Edward Covil; three grandsons, Judson Calkin (Tricia), Wesley Calkin (Rebecca) and Gabriel Calkin (Caroline); four great-grandchildren, R.J. Calkin, Leah Calkin, Samuel Calkin and Phoebe Calkin; three sisters, Lucy King James, Mary King Lyons and Frances King Pressley (James); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3, at Providence Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations in Robert’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
