Carrol Samuel Edens, 83, known by many as “The Hugger”

WILMINGTON — Carrol Samuel Edens, 83, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.

He was born Aug. 22, 1934, in Holly Ridge to Leonard and Annie Howard Edens.

Carrol was a longtime and faithful member of Temple Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Jack Marshburn Sunday School Class. He served the church as a deacon and on many committees, including the Pastor Search Committee, and was a coordinator of the Wednesday night suppers. He was named a deacon emeritus and was known as “The Hugger” by his many church friends.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from DuPont in 1993. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and working in his vegetable garden.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Garrenton Edens; three children Jeff Edens, Dana Edens and Forrest Edens, and his wife, Becky; sisters-in-la, Catherine Edens and Faye Edens. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leamon and Victor Edens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 14, at Temple Baptist Church, located at 18th and Market streets. The family will see friends beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Temple Baptist Church or a charity of choice.
