
WILMINGTON — Mr. Rupert Daniel Worthington, 97, died Sunday, May 13, 2018. He was born March 26, 1921, in Wilmington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Frederick Worthington and Lottie Leonard Worthington; brothers, Homer K. Worthington and Oliver G. Worthington; and his dear wife, Alice Orr Worthington. Alice was the love of his life. They were married 64 years until her death Aug. 14, 2013.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lucille Worthington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946. He was in the battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a veteran of World War II.
He was employed by the Corps of Engineers for 44 years. He retired in 1980. He was the owner and operator of Ornamental Concrete Business in Wilmington.
He was a member of the Myrtle Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church from 1948 until his death. He served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and choir director. He also designed the plans for the church building. Rupert was a good Christian man with deep values. He was a good friend and neighbor to all.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, at Andrews Market Street Chapel and from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, also at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
