WILMINGTON — Harold Eugene Cooper, 85, was born July 31, 1932, in Roanoke, Va., to Oscar Littleton Cooper and Nettie Booth Cooper. The youngest of nine children, he grew up in Roanoke and moved to Wilmington at age 14.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Faye Stanley Cooper; daughter, Cathy Cooper Weaver (Dr. Michael) of Greer, S.C.; son, Timothy Eugene Cooper (Cindy) of Rocky Point; three grandchildren, Alex Paul Zygmunt (Carol) of Tempe, Ariz., Vance Eugene Zygmunt (Jericho) of Yucaipa, Calif., and Denise Marie Cooper of Rocky Point; and many nieces and nephews.
He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952 and served four years active and four years inactive duty. Upon discharge, he went to work for Southern Bell and retired from Southern Bell/AT&T after 30 years. After retiring, he began Cooper Telephone Service and successfully served many businesses in and around the Wilmington area for 15 years.
At his death, he was a member of Whispering Pines Baptist. He was an ordained deacon at Lake Forest Baptist in 1961 and served as an S.S. and T.U. teacher, S.S. superintendent and sang in the choir. Later, he later served at Grace Baptist as a choir member, in the bus ministry, and taught S.S. His testimony was, “I am His and He is mine.” He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was faithful to God, family and friends; he loved them all. He always put others ahead of himself. He loved working in his yard, fishing, and RVing. He will be greatly missed and always lovingly remembered.
“I am His and He is Mine” Loved with everlasting love, led by grace that love to know – spirit breathing from above, thou hast taught me it is so. O this full and perfect place, O this transport all divine – in love that cannot cease, I am His and He is mine. – Wade Robinson
