WILMINGTON — Marice “Marcy” Watkins Vereen, 86, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, in the presence of family. She was the wife of Robert Earl “Bob” Vereen, her lifelong friend and spouse of 26 years.

Born in Rocky Point, N.C., Marcy was the daughter of James and Cora Watkins. She was a graduate of New Hanover High School and worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, Greenville County Courthouse and JCPenney.

Marcy raised three daughters with her first husband, with whom she lived in Georgia, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. She later reunited with her childhood neighbor and sweetheart, Bob Vereen; they married and moved back to their hometown of Wilmington, N.C., in 1991.

Marcy was an active member of Church of the Good Shepherd, serving on the vestry, altar guild and various committees. Ever the go-getter, she also helped to maintain the church garden, frequented senior bingo at the Moose Lodge, and took part in senior exercise and dance classes. Those who knew Marcy will miss her quick wit, her helpful, affable nature, her admirable Scrabble skills, and her legendary cooking.

She is survived by her siblings, Ethel and Roy (Judy); daughters, Dawn, Noel (Steve) and Beth; stepdaughters, Teresa and Angie; grandchildren, Melanie, Jason, Jared, Katie, Jeremy and Jacob; and numerous great-grandchildren. Marcy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob; parents, James and Cora; sister, Geneva; son-in-law, Mike; grandson, Stephen; and beloved poodle, Buffy.

In honor of Marcy’s beautiful life and spirit, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, at Church of the Good Shepherd, 515 Queen St., Wilmington. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd.
