WILMINGTON — Alton Yates “Butch” Lennon, 74, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017. He was born Dec. 27, 1942, in Wilmington, N.C., to Karine Welch Lennon and Congressman Alton Asa Lennon.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda “Scotty” Lennon; sister, Edna Lee Frost; sister-in-law, Arlene MacDonald; brother-in-law, Ian “Mac” MacDonald; daughters, Natalie Lennon Jarman, and her fiancé, Jerry Harrell, Alison Lennon Baxley and Rebecca Lennon-Thompson, and her husband, Adam Thompson; stepson, Gary Martin; and stepdaughter, Rhonda Martin. An extremely dedicated grandfather, Alton is also survived by his grandchildren, Jonathan Poff, Davis Martin, Caitlin Vaughn, Kelsey Toler, Austin Toler, Mackenzie Martin, Whitney Davis, Rosser Baxley and Greylen Baxley.
After graduating New Hanover High School, Alton received his B.A. in 1965, graduating cum laude, and his J.D. in 1968, both from Wake Forest University. He practiced law for many years with the law firm of Stevens McGee, Wilmington.
Alton loved life and surrounded himself with friends, family and fishing…and a bit of golf. He was at equally at home traveling the world or in the living room immersed in a good book. His passion for the outdoors was rivaled only by his love of a good porterhouse steak and his beloved Demon Deacons. Alton expressed his love for art both on his walls and in his snappy wardrobe.
The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 30, at the Marsh Oaks Club House.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wake Forest Fund, or the North Carolina Coastal Federation.
