Alfred Raymond ‘Fred’ Ortiz Jr., 84, member of the Calabash Elks Lodge

CAROLINA SHORES — Alfred Raymond “Fred” Ortiz Jr., 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017.

Born June 28, 1933, in Jersey City, he was a son of the late Alfred R. Ortiz Sr. and Marie Anderson Ortiz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Ortiz; and daughter-in-law, Patricia Ortiz.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps League and past commander of American Lodge #503, Floral Park, N.J. He was also a member of the Calabash Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Mohan Ortiz of the home; sons, James Ortiz (Shelloa), Joseph Ortiz, and his domestic partner, Karas, Alfred Ortiz III, and his life partner, Andrew, Timothy Ortiz and Charles Smith, and his fiancée, Patti, all of Long Island, N.Y.; daughters, Susan Ferguson (Jim) and Karen Murray (John, all of Long Island, N.Y.; brother, Dominic Ortiz of West Hampstead, N.Y.; sister, Edna Roode of Calabash, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church.
