John W. Protenic, 86, played as much golf as his wife would allow

WILMINGTON — Mr. John W. Protenic, 86, died peacefully at Davis Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017.

John is survived by his son, Jay; grandchildren, Jenna and Jack; daughter, Janice (Rebman); son-in-law, Jay; grandchildren, Jason, Jessica and Jonathan; brother, Thomas, and sister-in-law, Oksana; and many friends. John was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn, in 2010, and now they’re together again.

John was born May 1, 1931, in Ambridge, Pa., and graduated from Ambridge High School in 1949. John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and used his Navy radar training to become an air traffic controller, where he served for 36 years, 26 of which he was assigned to the En Route Center in Oberlin, Ohio, and resided in Lorain. John retired September 1988 to Wilmington, where he could play all the golf JoAnn would let him. He was a scratch golfer most of his adult life.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel, 17730 Highway 17 N., Hampstead. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at All Saints Catholic Church. Internment will follow services in Sea Lawn Memorial Park.
