George Willard ‘Bill’ Heylmun

George Willard “Bill” Heylmun, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at Woodbury Wellness Center.

Bill was born April 9, 1924, in Tonawanda, N.Y., son of the late Willard and Edna Heylmun. His brother, Charles Heylmun, preceded him in death.

Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a member of the 5th Armored Division, he landed one month after D-Day. They were the first Division to enter Germany and was the closest division near Berlin when the war ended. For his courageous service, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Combat Medic Badge among others.

He retired from Union Carbide after 37 years of service. He was a member of Topsail Presbyterian Church. Bill had a great sense of humor, was an avid golfer and member of Olde Point Country Club. He enjoyed bowling, and traveling, as he and Doris enjoyed many trips in their R.V. as well as seeing the world.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Doris Stahl Heylmun; and two daughters, Janet Heylmun of Danbury, Conn., and Judith Heylmun of Hampstead, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 17, at Andrews Hampstead Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Topsail Presbyterian Church. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to Topsail Presbyterian Church, 16249 US Hwy 17 North, Hampstead, NC 28443; or to Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Headquarters, 406 W. 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111.
