LELAND — Dorothy Ester “Dot” Buffkin Butler, 94, passed away Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at Brunswick Cove Living Center, Winnabow. She was born Aug. 16, 1923, in St. Pauls, N.C., to Gilbert Henry and Heddie Jackson Buffkin.
She was very loving, giving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother “Gram,” great-grandmother, sister and friend to many who will miss her dearly.
Dot worked tirelessly with her husband, J.J., in the farming business while raising their sons. She later worked at the Leland Race Track, where she managed the concession stand for many years. Other employment included Belks, the Battleship USS N.C., and General Nutrition Center. She was a member and past president of the Scotch Bonnet Chapter of the ABWA.
She is survived by her three sons, Poe Butler, Lloyd Butler (Jean Speight) and Mike Butler (Joy); five grandchildren, Angie Kelly, Tina Wallace, Jeffrey Butler, Chris Butler and Ashley Butler; five great-grandchildren, Jensen Wallace, Thomas Wallace, Sawyer Butler, Dallas Bowers and Tucker Parrish; and brother, Carl Buffkin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jalmas Jefferson (J.J.) Butler; and her parents and two brothers.
One of her favorite bible verses she loved to share was II Timothy 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at First Baptist Church of Leland, 517 Village Road, Leland. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Wallace, Andy Parrish, Charles Helsel, Ricky Horne, Peter Horne and Gordon Powell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
