WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — Strong winds and surf in the wake of Hurricane Irma reached the Carolina coast Monday afternoon.
Although the storm has since been downgraded to a tropical storm and did not directly hit the Cape Fear region, strong winds and coastal flooding are projected by the National Weather Service. The weather hazards have even caused closings of stores, ferries and even commercial flights out of the Wilmington International Airport.
The surf around the Oceanic pier, at the south end of Wrightsville Beach, was especially rough.
