James Thomas Flannery, 80, enjoyed flying his own plane

WILMINGTON — James Thomas Flannery, 80, of Wilmington, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born Oct. 28, 1936 in New York City, son of the late Daniel A. Flannery and Winifred Teresa Burns Flannery. A sister, Mary Brady, preceded him in death.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired from Con Edison after 39 years of service. Jim enjoyed boating, being outdoors, flying his own plane, and helping his neighbors. He had a strong faith and was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Eleanor Flannery; children, Sarah Aab (Michael), James Flannery Jr., all of Wilmington, Matthew Flannery of Astoria, N.Y., and Erin Flannery of Amityville, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Brianna, Kieran, and Sarahanne Aab; sister, Sally Mooney (Jerry); sister-in-law, Agnes Maher; brother-in-law, Gerry Cilio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, at Andrews Valley Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev. John McGee officiating. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington NC 28401.
