Mary Ruth Hayes Miller, 80, known as ‘Miss Mary,’ she loved to feed everyone

Mary Ruth Hayes Miller, 80, of Wilmington, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.

Mary was born in Dillon County, South Carolina  on June 16, 1935 to the late Joseph Dennis Hayes and Lela Lane Hayes. She was also preceded in death by her son, Russell Rogers Miller, Jr.

Mary graduated from Lower Marlboro in Blenheim, South Carolina. She was previously employed by A&P Grocery, Noble Middle School and Lowes Home Improvement. She was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church.

She was known to all as “Miss Mary” and to her family as “Andma.” She loved NASCAR racing, especially Jimmie Johnson, and all kinds of sports. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister. She was a wonderful caregiver and friend to everyone she knew. She loved to cook and feed everyone.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Denise Miller; son, Dean Miller and wife Karen; daughter, Deana Denton and husband Michael; grandson, Dustin Miller; brother, J.D. Hayes, Jr. and wife Joanne of Houston, Texas; sisters, Betty Collins of Cayce, South Carolina, Joyce Dotson and husband Howard of Eustis, Florida and Carolyn Doak of Buchanan, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, 3915 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington, NC 28403, with Pastor Mark Teachey officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28412.

Memorial contributions may be made to Winter Park Baptist Church or Good Shepherd Ministries of Wilmington.
