Mary Louise “Marilu” Schmid, of Hampstead, died peacefully at her home on Aug. 6, 2015, after battling cancer. She was 85.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Oliver Schmid.
She was born March 19, 1930, in St. Paul, Minnesota, daughter of the late Herbert and Mildred Kolars Tollas.
Marilu received her nursing degree from St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul. She married Jim shortly after graduating and worked as a nurse.
Marilu is survived by her children, Cindy Martin, of Berkley Springs, West Virginia, Peggy Brown, of Sterling, Virginia, Jim Schmid Jr., of Wilmington, Jeanne Angelos, of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Judi Hickerson, of Louisville, Kentucky and Tom Schmid, of Hagerstown, Maryland. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.
Marilu and Jim moved to Crystal City, Missouri, after Jim’s graduation in 1953. After 17 years, Jim was transferred and they moved to Cumberland, Maryland, in 1970 and then to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1978. They retired to Olde Point in Hampstead in 1984.
Marilu was an avid golfer and involved in the Olde Point Golf and Country Club Women’s Association. She and Jim also started the Olde Point Couples Bowling League, in which she still bowled until eight months prior to her death. She was also active in bridge clubs and gardening, and she and Jim traveled far and wide during their retirement years.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at All Saints Catholic Church in Hampstead, with the Rev. John Durbin officiating. Inurnment will follow at Sea Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marilu’s memory may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
