Carson “Buddy” Mitchell Benson, 93, member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for 72 years

Carson “Buddy” Mitchell Benson, longstanding member of Elks Lodge 532, American Legion Post #10 and VFW Post 2573, died in his sleep on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013. He was 93.

Mr. Benson graduated from New Hanover High School, class of 1938, and soon after took a job as a switchman at the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. He served a tour of duty for the U.S. Army in Korea, then returned to the railroad until his retirement in 1985. For many years, he served as the secretary and treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen where he was a member for 72 years. Mr. Benson was a charter member of Devon Park Methodist Church.

Mr. Benson was born in Wilmington on Oct. 23, 1920, and was preceded in death by his parents, Carson M. Benson and Rosie Benson and his wife, Clara Belle Benson.

He is survived by his son, Carson M. Benson Jr.; daughter-in-law, La Cinda Sue Benson; grandsons, Carson Alexander Benson and Cary Benson; and granddaughter, Kathryn Lee Benson, of Charlotte.

Grave side services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
