Robert Eugene Diehl earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Delaware and spent his entire career working for American Cyanamid Company in Princeton, N.J. as a research scientist in Chemical Discovery.
Mr. Diehl died on Nov. 10, 2013. He was 79 years old.
He was the first recipient of the Technical Excellence Award, Agricultural Division of Cyanamid. He held numerous patents for his work.
Though he was accomplished in his profession, he will be remembered most of all as a thoughtful, kind and generous man. Mr. Diehl enjoyed raising orchids and African violets, as well as photography, fishing, soccer, history, puzzles and traveling. He loved his grandchildren dearly.
He was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia and was preceded in death by his parents, Huston E. and Mary W. Diehl and a niece, Susan.
Mr. Deihl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; sons, Scott and wife, Katie, of Delran, N.J. and Michael and wife, Rahong, of Thailand; daughter, Sandy and husband, Scott, of Wilmington; sister, Glory and husband, Randy, of Bear, Del.; grandchildren, Grace, Isabel, Cameron, Andrew, Mickey and Mac; in-laws, Ralph and wife, Tina of Hockessin, Del. and Virginia of Chicago; nieces, Patty, Debbie and Kristin; nephew, Matt; and two special dogs.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, in St. Brendan’s Catholic Church. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Sea Trail’s Pink Palace, Sunset Beach.
