SUNSET BEACH — On September 14 around 11:40 a.m., Brunswick County Public Utilities spilled over 8,000 gallons of wastewater near 80 Mill Pond Road in Sunset Beach. County staff repaired the force main sewer at 7 p.m. and the spill was cleaned up at the site.
An 8-inch sanitary sewer, which is an underground tunnel system that carries wastewater from homes or other buildings to a treatment plant, was struck by a contractor and caused the leak.
The leak reached a tributary of the Calabash River, and downstream sampling is ongoing at the affected site.
