SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Cape Fear Public Utility Authority customers have been targeted by phone scammers. The agency suggests: hang up immediately.

In a press release issued by the CFPUA, the agency reported that customers may receive phone calls for a voice phishing scam. Reports claim a robo-call from a “Fraud Prevention Department” is asking customers to provide personal information. The calls appear to be made from the CFPUA’s main phone number — 910-332-6550 — using spoofing technology.

The CFPUA does not have an independent fraud prevention department and will never ask for non-standard payment methods like gift cards or bitcoin.

Customers are asked to hang up the call immediately if the phone call seems fraudulent or to call the main number to reach customer service. CFPUA customers can also independently monitor and view their accounts here.
