1,000 trees to be given away for Valentine’s Day

WILMINGTON — For the love of nature and to help repopulate the tree canopy in Wilmington, the nonprofit Alliance for Cape Fear Trees is planning a Valentine’s Day tree giveaway.

Around 1,000 trees will be available, with the event taking place at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, on the Northside of downtown at 813 Nixon St.

The following tree species will be gifted:

  • Southern live oak
  • Overcup oak
  • Blackgum
  • Bald cypress
  • Longleaf pine
  • Sweetbay magnolia
  • Persimmon
  • Pawpaw
  • Eastern redbud
  • American hornbeam
  • Sourwood

Open to families and students of Virgo, as well as nearby DREAMS of Wilmington, Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern NC, Voyage and Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K, households are allowed to take home up to two trees. Students and their families get first dibs at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, and the giveaway then opens to the public from 11 a.m. to noon.
