
WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department responded to a call at the 2200 block of Wrightsville Avenue after receiving a report about a man slumped over a steering wheel in a vehicle, with his foot on the accelerator.
The Wilmington Fire Department was already on the scene with the man pulled out of the vehicle when officers showed up. The man has been identified as 47-year-old Daniel Hewett, carrying drug paraphernalia in his hand.
Upon searching the vehicle, police officers discovered 60 grams of methamphetamine, over 56 grams of cocaine, more than 160 bundles of fentanyl, marijuana, a stolen handgun, and parts used to assemble a firearm suppressor.
Hewett was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. After being cleared, he will be brought to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.
Hewett faces several charges, including:
- Driving While Impaired (DWI)
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW)
- Possession and Trafficking of Methamphetamine
- Possession and Trafficking of Cocaine
- Possession With Intent to Sell and Deliver Fentanyl
- Simple Possession of Marijuana
- Possession of a Stolen Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
- Possession of a Weapon of Mass Destruction
The investigation is ongoing.
