PCSO cites 3 DWIs at checkpoint, 20 for other violations

PENDER COUNTY — A checkpoint in Pender County was set up on Friday, July 14, in cooperation with other law enforcement to target drunk drivers or motorists operating a vehicle under the influence of narcotics.

It turned up 23 citations in total and three for driving while under the influence.

The checkpoint was set up at 24334 US Hwy 17 in Hampstead. Charges included:

  • 3 DWI
  • 6 Driving while license revoked
  • 2 Other misdemeanor criminal violations
  • 1 No operations license
  • 11 All other traffic violations

Other agencies involved included the sheriff’s offices of New Hanover, Onslow, and Brunswick, as well as police departments in Burgaw, Surf City, and Wallace. NC Highway Patrol and Pender County Emergency Management joined the operation.

According to a release from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, distracted driving caused 53,541 crashes in North Carolina in 2019, with 154 fatalities. Though DWI caused about a quarter as many crashes 11,492, it resulted in more than twice the fatalities at 348.
