Work on Racine and New Center intersection to begin Monday

WILMINGTON — A transportation bond project is slated to begin Monday and disrupt traffic patterns over the next five months.

The intersection of Racine and New Center drives is getting new curb ramps, sidewalks, signalized crosswalks and a pedestrian “refuge” island on the intersection’s Northwest corner. The end goal is to reduce traffic congestion and make the area safer for pedestrians.

Traffic will be allowed to pass through the intersection until the project is complete, but patterns will cjange as work progresses and the city advises motorists should avoid unecessarily traveling through the area. Pedestrian detours will be installed to guide people walking on sidewalks around the project.
