PENDER COUNTY — A grant awarded in Pender County will make learning science a little easier and more approachable for some middle school students.
The Pender County Christian Services received an $11,000 grant from Resourceful Communities to bring a weather-related curriculum to the county. Weather Wise is a program aligned with the N.C. Essential Standards for science and will help prepare students for middle school science content and be made available to all fifth graders in the county.
The project is specifically designed to reach populations who may be challenged, economically or geographically, to patriciate in more informal learning activities, according to Pepper Hill with Pender County Christian Services — a nonprofit food pantry, disaster relief and clothing center founded in 1982.
“Students will engage in weather science demonstrations, conduct exciting
experiments, and receive a kit of materials to share and continue exploring weather at home,” Hill said in a press release.
Science Alliance of North Carolina will contribute to the weather program by donating hours, materials and video production.
Resourceful communities, established in 1991 to support grassroots organizations, awarded 52 grants so far this year, totaling $563,320 to support community projects that promote economic development, social justice and environmental stewardship. Funding comes from statewide private foundations including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, Dogwood Foundation, Duke Endowment and Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
