NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office rescued a dog and arrested its owner after discovering evidence of animal cruelty at the Wilmington resident’s home.

The office’s Animal Services Unit arrested Kristen Makande for felony animal cruelty, a Class H felony that carries a sentence of five to six weeks in prison for first offenses.

In a July 26 press release, the sheriff’s office responded to a possible animal cruelty report at 2003 Fall Drive. According to ASU deputies, the dog, named Genghis Khan, appeared extremely malnourished with visible hip, spine and rib bones. Its urine was an unnatural dark color, indicating dehydration. The dog was missing several patches of hair and had open sores on its feet, legs, and tail, which Makanda claimed was due to a skin condition. Makande also said the dog was fed regularly.

After an evaluation, a veterinarian determined that all conditions could have been easily prevented with basic care.

The sheriff’s office reported Genghis Khan has been nursed back to good health and is currently in ASU care.
