Brunswick County bridge replacement to continue

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The replacement of the bridge over Batarora Branch stream will resume after several months of delay.

The $1.2 million project to demolish and replace the 50-year-old bridge on Maco Road will detour drivers onto U.S. 74/76 and Interstate 140, according to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The project was halted in May after environmental agencies found Carolina Wren, a protected species, nesting underneath the existing bridge. A few weeks ago, the birds were discover to have flown away, allowing contract crews to continue their work.

The new bridge is planned to open in late fall of this year.
