NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A man accused of trying to murder his wife pleaded guilty in court Tuesday. He will serve up to 180 months in prison.
Twenty-nine-year-old Matthew Stallings was charged in January 2021 with first-degree attempted murder. Police said in a report last year he stabbed his wife more than 15 times and threw her from the second-story balcony of her apartment off North College Road.
Stalling was charged for also breaking into his estranged wife’s home around 8 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the New Providence Park Apartments. New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office detailed the victim was treated for life-threatening injuries and was in stable condition back then; she survived the attack.
Deputies arrested Stallings — located in Duplin County and with assistance from the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office — for attempted murder.
Stallings was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with a minor present, assault on a female, communicating threats, and first-degree burglary. He pleaded guilty to assault with a deadline weapon, first-degree burglary and attempted first-degree murder.
