Teenager attempting to flee police in stolen vehicle faces charges

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A 17-year-old has been charged for theft of a vehicle and first-degree kidnapping, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies filed a report early Thursday on a Jeep Cherokee that was stolen from the Monkey Junction Walmart, a press release stated. Later the same day, the Jeep was located along Carolina Beach Road by a detective who called for backup.

The driver — who also had a teen female passenger in the vehicle — attempted to flee the police. The sheriff’s office reported he turned down multiple streets in the Myrtle Grove area before officers performed a “PIT” maneuver on Carolina Beach Road near the neighborhood entrance of The Cape.

Once blocked in, the driver tried to flee the scene by foot though was caught and arrested. The passenger was not arrested, according to the release.

The 17-year-old male has been charged with various Chapter 20 violations — “defense to driving without a license” — in addition to larceny of a motor vehicle and first-degree kidnapping.
