LELAND — The Town of Leland has a new fire chief: Ronnie Hayes.

Since 2007, Hayes has served as captain, assistant chief of operations, and deputy chief for Leland Fire and Rescue. Hayes has also served as the town’s fire marshal since 2017’s merging of the fire department and the Town of Leland. Town public safety director Chris Langlois notified as director in January, previously held the position of fire chief before Hayes’ promotion.

Prior to coming to Leland, Hayes served as the Columbus County Emergency Services director and a Brunswick County emergency services paramedic. From 1995 to 2001, with 32 years of fire service experience holding several positions, Hayes served as fire chief of Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department.

Hayes additionally serves as a Fire, EMS, and FEMA instructor, working with local community colleges, and has numerous fire and EMS certifications. He will soon obtain a B.S. in disaster management from Western Carolina University in December 2022.

Having previously served on the NC Fallen Firefighters Foundation Board of Directors, Hayes currently is on the board of directors of the Eastern Carolina Firefighters Association.
