WILMINGTON —A 23-year-old woman is under arrest after allegedly breaking into cars with juveniles and provoking a police chase early Saturday morning in Wilmington.
Tyrika Lashay Wilson and two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, were apprehended following a “short foot pursuit.”
Around 2:44 a.m., officers responded to a report of car break-ins at Hawthorne at Indy West Apartments, in the 3900 block of Carolina Beach Road. When officers arrived they say the suspects were going into a truck. They then attempted to flee the scene, striking and causing minor damage to a police car, according to WPD’s news release. The officer driving was uninjured.
The police then pursued the suspects’ get-away car to the 3700 block of Carolina Beach Road, where they allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and ran. K-9 helped find the suspects and evidence, including two guns.
Wilson is charged with failure to give information and aid to an injured person, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, assault on a government official, larceny of a motor vehicle and resisting an officer. She is at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
The juveniles, both of whom were released to their parents, face two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle. More charges may be pending, according to WPD.
WPD issued the following statement: “The Wilmington Police Department is reminding the public to please lock your vehicle doors and if you have a firearm take the firearm out of your vehicle at night. This is a case where we have firearms getting into the hands of juveniles. Please be responsible and secure your firearms.”
