Brunswick County Schools closed Friday due to winter weather

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Brunswick County Schools will be closed Friday due to the forecasted icy conditions.

“We just can’t risk having students or staff on the roads with the threat of the winter system headed this way,” school system spokesperson Daniel Seamans said.

Staff will have a non-required, work-from-home day.

Pender County Schools students will learn virtually Friday. New Hanover County Schools has not made any announcements as of Thursday at 9:15 a.m.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a major winter storm in southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina. Freezing rain is expected to start Friday and continue into the next morning, creating dangerously icy conditions. There is a chance of sleet and snow Saturday.

Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Wednesday ahead of the storm.
