SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The National Weather Service (NWS) has released a potential severe weather forecast for Thursday, Mar. 18, 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the greater Wilmington area. Widespread, intense storms are expected across North Carolina and onto the coast.
A cold front will be moving through the area that could spawn tornadoes, hail, cloud-to-ground lightning, flooding, and strong winds up to 60mph. Downed trees and power lines, as well as power outages could happen. Flooding also may affect low-lying areas, with the heaviest rains slated for early Thursday.
The storm may trigger 6-foot sea surge through early next week. Northerly winds are expected to become gale force on Friday.

Anyone in the path of a tornado warning should take shelter in a basement or cellar, or the smallest room of the house, preferably without windows. If on the road, drivers should remain in a low, flat location, and not stopped at an underpass or a bridge.
All unsecured outdoor items — furniture, garden ornaments, trash cans, flower pots, etc. — should be stowed away. Homes should be reinforced as much as possible, and an emergency kit of food, water, important documents and life-saving supplies should be readily available.
A safe room should be designated for other essentials, supplies or items of importance.
