The Agenda: This week in local government

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, Feb. 19

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in the courthouse, 24 N. Third St, Room 201. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Cape Fear Public Utility Authority annual report
  • Consideration of the county as fiscal agent for the endowment grant to the DA’s office for the community justice center 

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda review at 8:30 a.m. in city hall council chambers, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Presentation of the Greenfield Park Master Plan
  • Ordinance Amending the Land Development Code, Chapter 18, to Exempt Currently Existing Bona Fide Farm Uses Over Ten Acres from Certain Zoning and Permitting Requirements 

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will be meeting at 6 p.m. at 30 Government Center in Bolivia. The agenda includes such matters as using $500,000 to replace the Shallotte water meters, looking at deducted $67,654 from the contract for the utilities operation center expansion and extended the contract for 142 days, and reviewing the awarding of $2,101,695 one-year agreement with Wellpath LLC for the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center Inmate Services. 

The Leland Town Council will be meeting at 10:00 a.m. at Fire Station 51. The agenda includes such items as the 2024-25 fiscal year budget. 

Kure Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. at Town Hall council chambers, 117 Settlers Lane. The agenda includes a resolution to establish a 10% town participation goal in historically underutilized businesses and approval of a $15,000 tourism master plan.

Tuesday, Feb. 20

The Wilmington City Council will meet 6:30 p.m. in city hall council chambers, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Ordinance Amending the Land Development Code, Chapter 18, to Exempt Currently Existing Bona Fide Farm Uses Over Ten Acres from Certain Zoning and Permitting Requirements [Land Use Action]
  • Resolution Authorizing the Negotiation of an Amendment to an Installment Financing Contract in an Amount Not to Exceed $32,000,000 to Finance Various City Projects Including Streets, Sidewalks, Riverwalk, a Sports Complex, and Related Property and Providing for Certain Other Related Matters Thereto

The New Hanover County Board of Elections will meets at 5 p.m. in the Longleaf Room,, 1241 A Military Cutoff Road, to review absentee ballot applications and discuss other election-related matters as needed. Ocean Isle Planning Board meets at 9 a.m., Town Hall, 111 Causeway Drive. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet at 4 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers in the David Sandifer Administration Building, 30 Government Center Drive NE. The board will discuss absentee ballots and regular voting matters. The meeting can be livestreamed via Zoom.

Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at the Public Assembly Room in Burgaw, 805 S. Walker St. The agenda includes a revision to a conditional rezoning of 310.5 acres for the Falls Mist Development and a budget amendment to purchase 13 Ford Explorers for $735,800 for the Sheriff’s Office.

The Brunswick County Board of Education Committees will meet beginning at 9 a.m. in the Brunswick County Schools Administrative Offices, 35 Referendum Drive. Meetings are live streamed here. The agendas include: 

  • Discussion of the board’s legal contract
  • NBHS and SBHS athletic updates
  • Recommended update to policy 4400 on attendance

The New Hanover County Schools Policy Committee will meet at 10 a.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes policies on public participation at board meetings, compliance with open meetings law, and meeting materials. 

Wednesday, Feb. 21

The Leland Parks and Recreation Board will be meeting at Town Hall at 6 p.m. The agenda features an update on the construction of Founders Park and a look at the Program and Event Cost Recovery Program. 

The N.C. Coastal Resources Commission will meet Feb. 21-22 at the Aloft Wilmington at Coastline Center, 501 Nutt Street. The meeting on the 21 starts at 10:30 a.m., with public comment —  limited to 3 minutes per person — scheduled for 10:45 a.m.  At 1:30 p.m., DEQ celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the N.C. Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA), with panelists discussing a range of coastal management topics: history of the N.C. Coastal Area Management Act, CAMA regulatory framework, local governments and partnerships, legislative engagement. All meetings are open to the public. On Feb. 22, the meeting starts at 9 a.m., with public input at 10:45 a.m. Agenda items for the commission meeting include:

  • Update on the public comment period for the CRC’s proposed on temporary rules;
  • Consideration of Town of Kure Beach’s Beach Management Plan;
  • Discussion of CRC and DCM Communication;
  • Update on Litigation of Interest to the Commission

Thursday, Feb. 22

Wave Transit will meet at 12:30 p.m. at Forden Station, 505 Cando St. The agenda includes updates from the executive, deputy and directors; the board will also go in to closed session. It’s open to the public. 

The Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority sustainability committee meets at 2 p.m.; an agenda was not posted by press.
