The Agenda: New Hanover County budget hearing

New Hanover County meets Monday at 4 p.m. (Port City Daily/Alexandria Sands)

Every Monday Port City Daily shares upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, June 6

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meets at 4 p.m. in the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse, 24 North Third St. Watch virtually on YouTube. The agenda includes:

  • Consideration of a land purchase for the future Gordon Road Fire Station
  • Economic development and incentive appropriations
  • A public hearing on the recommended budget

The New Hanover County Planning Board meets at 6 p.m. in the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse, 24 North Third St. The agenda includes two rezonings:

  • Approximately 2.42 acres, owned by Bethany Presbyterian Church, at 2311 Castle Hayne Rd. for community business
  • Approximately 7.11 acres at 924 Seabreeze Rd. and approximately 3.66 acres at 1001 Seabreeze Rd. for residential, at the request of Carolina Beach Villa

The Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw. The meeting can be livestreamed here. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A public hearing for the proposed fiscal year 2022-2023 budget. Review the draft budget online or in person at the county manager’s office.
  • Notice of intent to file for 2022 school bond and reimbursement resolutions
  • Award of contract to Bobbitt Construction for architectural and engineering design of the new HHS building. Read PCD coverage here.

The Town of Kure Beach will have a legislative hearing at 5 p.m. in council chambers at 117 Settlers Ln. The hearing agenda will cover items in the proposed budget:

  • No proposed property tax rate increase 
  • No changes to the water and sewer rate structure
  • No increase in monthly Storm Water fees 

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 102 North 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 or YouTube.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meets at 3 p.m. for its regular meeting in the commissioner’s chambers at 30 Government Center Dr. The agenda includes the following items:

  • A $447,584 contract with S.T. Wooten for the paving of the West Brunswick High School parking lot and $566,078 for the paving of the Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School parking lot
  • An amendment to the county’s Program Income Policy for the use of American Rescue Plan Act funds
  • A Memorandum of Understanding between U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations  Command, Brunswick County and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Tuesday, June 7

The New Hanover County Board of Education meets at 5 p.m. at the BOE Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Watch virtually here. The agenda includes:

  • The fiscal year 2022-23 budget proposal and adoption of the interim budget while it awaits revenue information from the state and New Hanover County
  • State-required monthly vote on the mask policy
  • Discussion about the written rules of decorum
  • A review of the current board attorney contract
  • Updates to the guidelines for use of seclusion and restraint will be provided

The New Hanover County Board of Education Policy Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. at the BOE Center, 1805 S. 13th St. It will review policies regarding attendance and the superintendent evaluation.

The Wrightsville Beach Planning Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at 321 Causeway Drive. View the agenda here. The livestream can be viewed here.

The Wilmington Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at Rankin Place Terrace, 415 N. 12th St. The Housing and Economic Opportunities Board of Directors will meet immediately following and the Glover Plaza, Inc. Board of Directors will meet after that.  

The Town of Burgaw Board of Commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St. There will be a public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2022-2023 budget.

The Pender County Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. at 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw. The meeting can be livestreamed here. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A revision to the Wyndwater master development plan. Read PCD coverage here.
  • Trask Land is requesting approval of a zoning text amendment to allow for the issuance of clearing and grading permits prior to final zoning approval.
  • A rezoning request for 303 acres of land 1 mile from the intersection of Ashton Road and U.S. Highway 117 from residential performance to rural agriculture.

The Town of Belville Planning Board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers, 63 River Rd. It will ​​ discuss procedures and hear construction updates.

The Surf City Town Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the municipal complex, 214 W. Florence Way. The meeting can be livestreamed on YouTube. The agenda includes:

  • A public hearing on an annexation request by Atlantic Ice Distributors, a conditional rezoning and a special-use permit
  • Discussion about the Beach Access Adoption Program. Read PCD coverage here.
  • A capital project ordinance amendment

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 102 North 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 or YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • Voluntary annexation of 4.82 acres on Middle Sound Loop Road. Read PCD coverage about the proposed development.
  • A public hearing on the draft five-year Community Development Block Grant, as well as other HUD funds.

The Brunswick County Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. in the conference room of The Center of Applied Sciences and Technology at 1109 Old Ocean Highway. The agenda includes discussion of:

  • Capital outlay budget resolution and five-year capital improvement plan 
  • Payroll schedules for 2022-2023
  • State-required monthly mask vote

Wednesday, June 8

The Southport Planning Board Indigo Review Sub-Commitee will meet at 3:30 p.m. at Indian Trail Meeting Hall located at 113 W. Moore Street.

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is meeting at 9 a.m. in the Lucie Harrell Conference Room, 230 Government Center Dr.

Thursday, June 9

The Leland Economic Development Committee meets at 6 p.m. in town hall, 102 Town Hall Dr. View the agenda here.

The Carolina Beach Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers at 1121 N. Lake Park Boulevard. Watch the livesteam here.

The Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman will meet at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers located at 321 Causeway Drive. View the agenda here. Watch the livestream here. 

  • Public hearing and consider approval of 2022/23 budget
  • Consider creation of a deputy fire chief position

The Southport Board of Alderman will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers in the Southport Community Building, located at 223 East Bay St. in Southport for a budget public hearing. View the agenda here. View the livestream here. 

The North Topsail Beach Board of Aldermen will meet for a special-called meeting at 1 p.m. to adopt the fiscal year 2022-2023 agenda. The meeting can be livestreamed here.

The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 102 North 3rd St. The agenda can be found here and includes consideration of new construction at 115-117 S Water St., the former Ice House site. Read PCD coverage here.
