NORTH CAROLINA — Attorney General Jeff Jackson has launched an online portal for North Carolinians to report businesses suspected of not lowering their gas prices due to the state’s recent gas tax suspension.

Gov. Josh Stein signed Session Law 2026-62 on Oct. 10, which suspends the state’s tax on gasoline and diesel through Nov. 30 to provide financial relief to drivers experiencing gas prices upwards of $4 a gallon. The 41-cent state tax accounted for 9.95% of the total price per gallon.

“If gas stations see their costs drop by 41 cents per gallon but don’t pass that along to drivers, that’s a massive windfall for these companies instead of relief for families,” Attorney General Jackson said in a press release. “My job is to make sure the savings reach the families.”

In his press release, Jackson noted gas stations pay the tax when they receive a new delivery of gas and many stations are still selling the fuel they already paid for, so gas prices won’t go down immediately.

Prices are expected to come down as stations receive new deliveries, which should happen within approximately a week, Jackson said.

Drivers can submit complaints on specific businesses to the attorney general through the N.C. Fuel Check form or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.

Reports should include the gas station’s name and address, the date and time, price per gallon, grade of the fuel at the station, a photo of the price sign and the receipt, explanation of why you believe the savings weren’t passed on, prices at nearby stations if applicable, and additional supporting documentation if needed.
