LELAND — First responders in Leland will be able to better identify people who have autism with its seatbelt cover initiative.

The Leland Police Department have 100 covers to give away to better assist people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the event of an emergency. The covers are free and alert personnel on a scene that extra patience, guidance, or support may be necessary when responding.

The covers are available through an online form and someone from LPD will contact applicants to pick up the cover; only one cover per person is allowed. A waitlist will open once the first batch of covers are spoken for.

“The Leland Police Department encourages individuals with ASD and their caregivers to attend the appointment together,” according to a release from LPD. “The meeting provides an opportunity to meet officers, build relationships, and establish a connection before an emergency occurs.”

Secured by Velcros, the cover wraps around a seatbelt easily; they’re easily removable between vehicles or when traveling, and can also adhere to strollers and backpacks. The covers also are outfitted with an interior slot for caregivers to write the person’s name, birth date, triggers, medical needs, emergency contacts and more.

The law enforcement will not store the information or make it publicly available. Reach out to Leland Police Department Community Engagement Officers at (910) 338-9374 for more details.
