WILMINGTON — Hope Abounds Cancer Network and UNCW’s Dr. Shaila Strayhorn-Carter will host two community focus-groups for The G.R.A.C.E. Study: Gathering Religious Advocacy for Cancer Examinations on Thursday, Sept 17, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Northside Church.
The G.R.A.C.E. Study is designed to explore how faith networks can help remove barriers, encourage proactive health behaviors, and strengthen community engagement in cancer prevention and cancer screening.
The study, done by Hope Abounds Cancer Network and Dr. Strayhorn-Carter, collects information about the experiences of cancer survivors and their families. The information will provide religious institutions with insights on how to better support community participation in cancer prevention and screening initiatives.
Dr. Strayhorn-Carter is a social epidemiologist and an associate professor in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She dedicates her work to empower diverse communities through cancer-prevention strategies and collaboration on effective screening initiatives.
Participants are eligible if they currently live in North Carolina, are at least 18 years old, have personal experience with cancer or a family history of cancer, are able to read and write in English and are willing to participate in a one-hour, in-person focus-group session.
Registration is free and refreshments are provided, as well as each participant will receive a $20 gift card as a thank you for their contribution.
Strayhorn-Carter may be contacted for further information by email at [email protected] or by phone at (910) 962-3808.
