WILMINGTON — A 69-year-old bicyclist was killed in a car collision this weekend.
Around 11:40 p.m. Friday night, Wilmington Police Departmnt units responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a bicyclist in the 2100 block of Carolina Beach Road. The cyclist, Christopher Johnston, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The vehicle was operated by 38-year-old Tierra Latrice Blackston who was traveling northbound on Carolina Beach Road. The WPD determined that Blackston, a Raleigh resident, was operating the vehicle while under the influence of an impairing substance and while her driver’s license was revoked. Several children were also inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Blackston was arrested and charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving, driving while license revoked and misdemeanor child abuse.
Blackston was given a $400,000 secured bond and transported to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing.
