WILMINGTON — One person is in the hospital and multiple officers on paid administrative leave after an armed individual opened gunfire on law enforcement on Friday, Aug. 21.

The incident happened near 7:30 p.m. as Wilmington Police Department deputies, working in partnership with New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of someone armed in the 700 block of Red Cross Street. According to WPD, the individual was reported as being aggressive and pointed a firearm at another person.

After officers located the person matching the perpetrator’s description, the person fired shots at law enforcement, with multiple officers discharging weapons in response, due to imminent threat and protecting nearby citizens. Emergency personnel responded, and the individual was transported to Novant Health NHRMC with serious injuries.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will lead the investigation of the officer-involved shooting, in accordance with standard policy. The investigation is ongoing.
