SURF CITY — Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 30, Surf City Utilities will complete a waterline connection along Steven Street.
Properties located between Greensboro Avenue and Mecklenburg Avenue may have discolored water while construction occurs and for a few hours after.
The town says the water will be drinkable during this time but they do not recommend laundering.
The work is expected to last four hours and is a part of Surf City’s Water Resiliency Project.
The project includes Surf City Utilities installing a new waterline on the mainland, under the Intracoastal Waterway, east on Roland Avenue and north along N. Shore Drive. Additionally a waterline will be added to Roland Avenue and the waterline on N. Shore Drive will be replaced.
The Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act gave Surf City $6.8 million for the project with 25% loan forgiveness. The town will be responsible for paying back $6.3 million over the next 20 years.
Upgrading the waterline system will allow for increased water capacity which the city says will help with fighting fires on the Island and bringing the water line up to current standards.
