WILMINGTON — For the 2026-2027 school year, Capt’n Bill’s — the premier sand volleyball facility with 12 courts, three bars, a brewery and full restaurant —has donated upward of $10,000 to local schools’ youth volleyball programs.
Owner Brookes Musser announced all four New Hanover County high school volleyball programs would receive $1,500 and eight local middle school volleyball programs would receive $500. In a conversation with Port City Daily Tuesday, July 28, Musser said the donations had been dropped off.
Last year Musser had donated $1,000 to high school volleyball programs, adding an additional $500 per school this year. The additional donation was due to the new implementation of boys volleyball programs at North Carolina schools — the first men’s volleyball championship is scheduled to be held in May 2027 per the North Carolina High School Athletics Association.
Musser increased her donation to ensure both the boy’s and girl’s teams could benefit from the contribution. This was also the first year she gave funds to middle school volleyball programs.
The donations aim to offset increased expenses associated with operating a thriving volleyball program. Capt’n Bills wants to invest in young athletes to ensure more children are able to participate in volleyball.
Since the company’s opening in 1992, Capt’n Bill’s has donated roughly $1 million back to the community — specifically local athletic programs — through charitable giving, fundraising events, and partnerships with local organizations.
Capt’n Bill’s has a unique take on dining, combining restaurant and bar service with sand volleyball courts. The facility began with four volleyball courts, a walk up bar and grill, but in the last three decades expanded to include Bill’s Brewing Company in 2016 and The Warehouse in 2017, which is a full size brewery and tap-room.
In a statement Musser said the new initiative continues the facility’s legacy of being a gathering place for athletes and families, coming together through the sport while reflecting “the company’s continued commitment to supporting student-athletes” and volleyball in North Carolina.
“The sport of volleyball has created an amazing community within Capt’n Bill’s, and we
believe it’s important to give back to the programs that are developing the next generation of players,” Musse said. “Coaches work tirelessly to create opportunities for their athletes, and we hope these donations help provide equipment, uniforms, tournament opportunities, and other resources that make a lasting impact.”
