NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Area residents in need of over-the-counter medications will be given an opportunity to receive free supplies at an event this month, featuring multiple health organizations.
NC MedAssist — which provides free medication particularly for the uninsured and people who fall at or below 300% of the poverty level — will host a mobile-free pharmacy on Friday, July 24. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the pharmacy will be set up at Christ Community Church off of Fairview Dr. from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Upward of 15 local organizations, including Novant Mobile Unit, Trillium Health Resources and Cape Fear Clinic, will be participating in the event.
Anyone 18 or older can receive pain relievers, cold and flu medication, antihistamines, digestive aids, vitamins, and children’s medication. No registration, identification, proof of residency or income eligibility is required for participation.
The event also aims to identify individuals who may be eligible for NC MedAssist’s Free Pharmacy Program. The program offers mail-order prescription medication on top of hosting community events, partnerships and state-level initiatives. In the past year, NC MedAssist has helped more than 91,000 North Carolinians and provided roughly $61 million worth of medication.
The organization was founded in 1997 and remains the only statewide non-profit pharmacy in North Carolina.
