CAROLINA BEACH — For two days this week, the Town of Carolina Beach will be conducting smoke testing of its sanitary sewer system.
On Feb. 24 through 26, smoke-testing involves opening manholes in the streets and public utility easements to push through the non-toxic smoke in order to locate breaks and defects that may be in the system.
It will affect the following streets and adjacent areas:
• Access Road
• Annie Drive
• Bimini Townes Lane
• Bridge Barrier Road
• Bridge Court
• Drill Shell Lane
• Green Turtle Lane
• Island Marina Drive
• Lewis Drive
• Otter Road
• Peninsula Drive
• Silver Sloop Way
• Spencer Farlow Drive
• St. Joseph Street
• Tahiti Court
• Teakwood Drive
• Whelk Lane
The goal is to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke will also reveal sources of where storm water and other surface waters enter the sewer system. While the smoke has a distinctive, but not unpleasant, odor, it doesn’t hurt animals or plant life. Visibility and odor last only a few minutes.
If traces of this smoke or its odor enter the house or building, then it could indicate gases and odors from the sewer also may enter. Should smoke enter your home or business, you may contact a member of the smoke testing crew working in the area or call Utilities Superintendent Chris Nichols at (910) 200-0711, or Well/Sanitary Sewer Pump Station Supervisor Shawn Thomas at (910) 782-9491.
However, corrections or defects on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.
