NEW HANOVER COUNTY— College Road Early Childhood Center will remain closed to its students Monday through Wednesday, January 12-14, of next week after the school district announced a fire occurred in the building Thursday.
However, NHCS clarified Friday there were no active flames in the building, but rather an “electrical issue that required an immediate response and a subsequent assessment of the facility.”
There was no class Friday, with NHCS stating officials need more time to continue evaluating and verifying the air quality within the building. Additional restoration and remediation work will continue through this weekend and into early next week. In addition, the building must undergo a review by the health department prior to reopening.
“We recognize that this is a significant inconvenience for families, and we do not make this decision lightly,” the district press release states.
The statement says NHCS considered alternate locations for students but would be unable to relocate the students while adhering to the state’s licensing requirements, child nutrition and meal service standards and student transportation logistics.
