BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A Sunset Beach man has turned a $3 investment into a $100,000 win after purchasing a Powerball ticket Christmas week.

Billy Ramsey has taken home a $100,000 prize after purchasing his lucky Quick Pick ticket for the then-$1.6-billion Powerball drawing on Dec. 22 from RM Mart on Seaside Road Southwest. He matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000; however, his prized doubled with the 2X multiplier purchase.

“You can’t win it if you’re not in it,” Ramsey said in a press release from the N.C. Education Lottery, noting he checked the ticket upward of five times, not believing the win was real. “I’ve never won anything before. It was very exciting.”

Ramsey took home $71,751 after taxes and plans to invest it in his retirement.

Education programs in Brunswick County received $6.3 million in support from lottery funds last year. The next Powerball drawing is on Wednesday evening; a winner would take home $45 million annuity or $20.7 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
