
OAK ISLAND — A fatal shooting at an Oak Island residence this week led to the homeowner’s arrest on a murder charge.

On Wednesday, July 23, at 6:18 p.m., Oak Island Police Department officers were dispatched to 332 NE 49th Street in Oak Island after receiving reports of gunshots in the area. Officers arrived to find one person fatally shot, and a suspect was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
The victim was identified as Randy Stewart, 61, of Southport (Boiling Spring Lakes). Stewart, the owner of Stewart Enterprises Locksmith Service, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The homeowner, 40-year-old Brian Reed Grant, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Grant is currently being held without bond at the Brunswick County Detention Center.
According to the Oak Island Police Department, the shooting appears to have occurred during a service call made by Stewart’s locksmith business.
Authorities have stated this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The OIPD was assisted in the investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Oak Island Fire Department, and Brunswick County EMS.
