NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The local board of elections has released finalized results, with winners remaining the same, after two recounts were filed in the county races on Monday.

Jerry Jones Jr., a Democrat seeking a seat on the school board, and incumbent commissioner Jonathan Barfield Jr., also a Democrat, filed to have all ballots tabulated a second time. Slim margins separated them from their third-place contenders and by state law any losing candidate has the right to demand a recount of votes if the disparity between the prevailer’s turnout is no more than 1% of the total vote.

Jones fell behind Republican David Perry by 302 votes and Barfield trailed incumbent Republican Dane Scalise by 244, which fell in those margins. Though the recount — which took the New Hanover County Board of Elections all day Wednesday and Thursday to complete — did not change winners or ranks, tabulations of each candidate were marginally affected.

For instance Jones lost 10 votes in the recount, while Barfield lost three. Only two Republican candidates, John Hinnant and Scalise, made gains. The final results are below with the plus and minus indicated

  • Republican Bill Rivenbark -5 : 62,797

  • Republican John Hinnant +1: 59,264
