SOUTHPORT — Residents near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant can expect to hear sirens the first week of October.

There will be test warnings conducted between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The plant will test 28 sirens within a 10-mile radius of the plant. It will sound at full volume for 3 minutes.

Testing will be conducted on 38 sirens located within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant, to ensure proper function. Some sirens will be tested more than once and there may be followup testing after 1 p.m. when maintenance is conducted.

Testing is performed quarterly, in cooperation with emergency officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens.

Local broadcasting stations will not be interrupted via the broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS). However, if there were a legitimate emergency at the plant, local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public.
